Playground Advisory Service

Kidsafe SA encourages and recognises the importance of play for all children. We believe in supporting children to be able to take positive risks in a hazard free environment.

Comprehensive Playground Inspection Service

Playground inspections are an important part of playspace maintenance. Kidsafe SA offers an onsite comprehensive playground inspection service, including written and photographic report. All comprehensive playground inspections are undertaken by a qualified playground inspector.

A comprehensive playground inspection is one to establish the overall safety of the equipment, foundations and surfaces (NB: Kidsafe SA does not conduct drop testing on playground surfaces). It focuses on conformance with the current Australian Standards for playgrounds and industry best practice.

The purpose of the Comprehensive Playground Safety Inspection is to identify and report on non-conformance; potential hazards on and in the playground; equipment; within the design and installation; maintenance; and environmental conditions that could present possible risk to children/users. Post inspection, a written and photographic report is provided which includes recommendations for rectifying non-conformances and making repairs. Each identified non-conformance is risk assessed according to ISO 31000.

Benefits of a regular and thorough Playground Inspection Program may be:

  • Reduction in potential playground injuries
  • Effective resource utilisation
  • Efficient planning and budgeting
  • Improved public image and community relations

Post-Installation Comprehensive Playground Safety Inspection

A post-installation comprehensive playground safety inspection is provided to verify that the playspace is ready for use and that the equipment supplied and installed conforms with the current playground Standards. A written report is provided which includes recommendations for rectifying non-conformances and making repairs. Each identified non-conformance is risk assessed according to ISO 31000.

Natural Playspace Safety Inspection

Natural playspaces are becoming more and more popular and provide children unstructured spaces for exploration, creativity, imagination and learning. Through a stimulating outdoor environment, nature-based play can offer benefits for children’s social, physical and emotional skills, improve cognitive function and creativity, boost self-esteem and improve resilience.

An inspection establishes the overall safety of the natural play elements, foundations and surfaces (NB: Kidsafe SA does not conduct drop testing on playground surfaces). It focuses on conformance with the current Australian Standards and industry best practice. A written report is provided which includes recommendations for rectifying non-conformances and making repairs. Each identified non-conformance is risk assessed according to ISO 31000.

Review of Plans Service

Kidsafe SA promotes the importance of children experiencing and learning about risk through safe, creative play. The Review of Plans service aims to assist designers and playground operators to create playgrounds that offer a balance between safety, challenge, natural elements and sculpture. Submit your playground plans to Kidsafe SA for assessment against the Australian Standards for playgrounds. This is a great method to gain advice regarding compliance prior to the commencement of works.

Review of playground plans will provide organisations with a written report. The report itemises identified areas of potential non-conformance and provides practical design solutions.

The benefits:

Independent review to the following Australian Standards:

  • AS 4685 Playground Equipment and Surfacing, including Part 0 - Development, installation, inspection, maintenance and operation;
  • AS 4422 Playground Surfacing - Specifications, requirements and test methods.

Post review, written report issued includes:

  • Recommendations on how to rectify non-conformances
  • Suggestions on recommended ‘best practice’ based on the diverse knowledge held by the Kidsafe team and current research and trends on safe, creative play.

Reports can be used to support applications for funding and playground improvement/upgrade
