playground safety resource kit
With funding support from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, Kidsafe SA has produced a Playground Safety Resource Kit for distribution free of charge to Early Childhood Sector sites throughout the state. The Kit provides information on the requirements of the latest Australian Standard for Play Equipment, AS 4685:2004. It also covers information on topics such as playspace provider's legal responsibilities, safe play surfaces, safe play withhout hazards, safe maintenance, safe play rules and safe play benefits.
The Playground Safety Resource Kit was launched on May 10th 2007 at the North Adelaide Primary School by Ms Lindsay Simmons, MP for Morialta (representing the Minister for Health).
Playground related injury has consistently been the largest cause of injury related presentations to the Emergency Department at the Women's and Children's Hospital in South Australia. A major issue with the area of safe playground provision is the lack of compliance and maintenance of existing facilities. Furthermore, since the release of the revised Australian Playground Equipment Standards (AS 4685 - 2004: Parts 1-6) in October 2004, there has been no resource available to assist playground providers with interpretation of the new Standards.
