Choosing a child restraint is a big decision and there are a lot out there to choose from! When shopping for a new child car restraint there are lots of things to think about. It is important however to keep safety at the forefront of your mind.
It has been reported that a number of products are being marketed online as ‘lightweight child car restraints’ however these products are dangerous and illegal for their intended use. These types of products (as pictured) are very basic and flimsy and would not provide adequate side impact or head or neck protection in the event of a collision. Australia has some of the most stringent child car restraint standards in the world – an overseas child car restraint would most likely not meet the Australian requirements and it is illegal to use overseas restraints if they do not comply with our standards.
Kidsafe SA advise against buying online unless you know EXACTLY what you are purchasing and that it is from a legitimate Australian site.
We recommend when purchasing a child car restraint that you shop around and compare restraints and models. Look at the restraints for yourself and ask questions about them. Always check to see that they carry the red Australian Standards sticker (picture below). This will ensure that you know you are purchasing an Australian approved and compliant child car restraint. By buying in-store you not only know exactly what you are purchasing but also the condition of the item.
